Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Internet and Wi-Fi?

Internet is the bandwidth, and speed it is delivered at, between the user's home or business, the provider's central office, and the websites the user is trying to access.

Wi-Fi is the distribution of the bandwidth delivered to the user's home or business throughout that home or business' network. The Wi-Fi distribution within the location is a substitute for cables or wires. While cables and wires may be inconvenient, there are drawbacks to Wi-Fi connectivity.

Bandwidth and speed are reduced when your Internet connection is distributed via Wi-Fi rather than wires. This will also result in increased latency and reduced ping rates. As noted previously, gaming is especially sensitive to latency, which is why we recommend gaming systems are hardwired for the best customer experience. As with all broadband providers, CC Communications' broadband packages are for Internet, and speeds delivered are to a network interface device. Distribution via Wi-Fi will marginally affect the speed when using a high-quality Wi-Fi router, as well as extenders if needed.

How much speed do I need?

All broadband packages will be served by fiber to the home or business, so bandwidth and speed will not be an issue. You may want to take a look at https://broadbandnow.com/bandwidth-calculator, which provides a third-party bandwidth calculator based on what devices you have in your home and how you use them. It is good to remember that while all of our packages are unlimited (NO DATA CAPS and NO OVERAGES), the total volume of data transmitted over your connection is different than the speed at which data is transmitted. For example, if you have a 250Mbps package, there is no limit to how many megabits you can transmit, but you would only ever be able to transmit 250 megabits in a second. You must also remember that one connection is shared by everyone within the home or business.

What business services are available in my area?

Internet, hosted UcaaS (business VoIP systems), security and alarms, managed firewalls, point to point circuits, dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM), web development, and IT support.

How much does CC Communications charge for a service call?

If it is an issue with CC Communications' network, service call charges would not apply. When taking managed Wi-Fi, service calls due to Wi-Fi router failure do not result in a service call charge. In the event it is determined the service call was due to customer operator error, customer caused damage to CC Communications equipment or customer-owned equipment, current technician rates would apply.

What is managed Wi-Fi?

CC Communications provides a 1GB/1GB capable dual-band router with both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz antennas with QoS. CC Communications takes full responsibility for this router, which means you never have to worry about buying a new one or paying for service charges related to a failed router. The CC Communications managed Wi-Fi includes a Calix Gigaspire or Gigacenter that allows CC Communications technicians to perform greater remote diagnostics and troubleshooting than other Wi-Fi routers. You are free to use your own Wi-Fi router, which would not affect the bandwidth or speed delivered to your home. When you use your own Wi-Fi router, please ensure it has the capacity to handle the speed delivered under your broadband package.

What is the best Internet for gaming?

Speed is one factor that impacts gaming. This should not be an issue with fiber to the home. However, as stated above, one Internet connection at your home is shared by all devices connecting to your connection. So, make sure your package is correct for the number and types of devices you are using in the home. To reduce lag and latency it is best to hardwire the gaming system. If not, the gaming system should be as close as possible to a QoS Wi-Fi router, and you should ensure that nothing is interfering with the signal. If you have a gamer in the home, please discuss with our representative so that we can get you set up correctly from the start.

How can I make sure my Wi-Fi signal is strong everywhere in my house?

Speak to a CC Communications representative about addressing unique needs brought about by larger homes, interference, or weak signals. CC Communications’ installers will use a device to check for signal strength and interference and make recommendations regarding the potential need to boost signal strength through the use of Wi-Fi extenders. Utilizing a mesh network of extenders can ensure that (1) the signal strength is good everywhere in the home or business. The mesh system can also ensure that your device switches to the strongest signal and least congested channel.

Why is CC Communications the BEST choice for Internet?

CC Communications is a rural Nevada company that has been around for over 130 years. We have been Nevada’s innovator in fiber to the home services and recognized as deploying the first FTTH in Nevada, and later connecting the first GB service in rural Nevada. We have always been about serving our Nevada neighbors with the same services we have in our own homes. As we build out the Spring Creek area we will continue to utilize Nevadans to build, operate, and maintain the network. Our revenue stays in Nevada and supports the local communities we serve. We look forward to becoming a part of the Elko and Spring Creek communities and being around for another 130 years and more.

Would it be possible to purchase a 1Gb option without the added lifetime of managed Wi-Fi and security package and lower the cost?

The advantage of being the first rural company to deploy FTTH to rural is that we have learned a lot along the way. CC Communications prides itself in delivering what we promise and creating the best customer experience for your money. This does not always come down to price, and it does not stop with installation. When customers have bad Internet experiences on fiber connections it generally comes down to four issues: First, poor construction such as not burying the fiber deep enough, which results in outages due to cuts (We bury our fiber deeper than required, and as far as we can tell, deeper than our competitors in most cases); Second, poor choices in equipment such as using gray market electronics not supported by the manufacturer (We buy direct from the manufacturer and have full support); Third, customers using their own Wi-Fi routers that choke the connection they have purchased. Low-quality Wi-Fi routers that fail to deliver the throughput necessary results in the customer mistakenly attributing a bad customer experience to the Internet connection, rather than realizing that their personal Wi-Fi router is the issue; Fourth, customer-owned devices such as computers, cell phones, smart TV’s, and tablets that are overwhelmed by viruses, bloatware, out of date patches and software upgrades, poor internal antennas, or simply too old to process the speeds we have delivered. The first two issues are mostly within our control, and we operate to minimize those issues (of course, we, unfortunately, did recently experience an outage due to a competitor’s out-of-state contractor cutting our fiber that was marked, located, and buried deeper than required. But we do all we can to protect ourselves from the carelessness of others.)

Regarding the latter two customer experience issues, we cannot require a customer to use our Wi-Fi router or virus/malware protection (or any virus/malware protection at all). Specifically speaking to the Wi-Fi router issue, experience has found that the majority of customers not using our Wi-Fi router experience the following: First, issues setting up their Wi-Fi router resulting in degraded service; Second, poor support from the manufacturer’s overseas tech support when setting up or troubleshooting their personally owned Wi-Fi router (our Wi-Fi router comes with no additional cost Nevada based support, us); Third, mistakenly attributing bad experiences to the Internet connection when the issue is the poor quality Wi-Fi router they purchased at a big box store; Fourth, they lose out on our ability to troubleshoot issues using the built-in tools for remote diagnostics that our Wi-Fi router has; and Fifth, they lose out on the diagnostic tools that allow us to identify anomalies before they become Internet issues. You are concerned that while the package says the services are included Free For Life with the 1GBPS package, but not the others, means that the price has been increased for a service you do not want. I understand that perception, and I am going to consider whether a change is needed. However, the reason behind including the free-for-life Wi-Fi router and virus/malware protection is based on our experience. The 1GBPS customer is looking for the highest level of service in both speed and reliability.

For the five reasons above, the quality of the Wi-Fi router and customer-owned devices is key to that experience. The average customer purchases the cheapest Wi-Fi router on the shelf at the big box store, and thereafter fails to maintain their devices free of viruses and malware. This degrades their service, which is especially apparent when the customer has chosen the 1GBPS service. Thus, this package was designed to ensure the customer gets what they have paid for. A final note on 1GBPS. I have previously sent mailers to potential customers, and I will tell anyone who that listens, you probably don’t need 1GBPS unless you have unique circumstances. For example, streaming HD video only takes 5Mbps per stream. You may want to check out consumer reports “how much bandwidth do you need. Cliff notes you could have 70 devices (ten each) simultaneously streaming/surfing social media, emailing and editing online documents, streaming 4k video, streaming music, online multiplayer gaming, group video calls, and running security cameras/video doorbell, and consumer reports say 480 Mbps is what you need. The average residential customer should save their money and stick with a 250 Mbps or 500Mbps connection. If a residential customer has experience issues with a 250 Mbps or 500Mbps connection at home, it is likely they have Wi-Fi router issues (interference or latency) or device issues (old computer, tablet, gaming system). Both of which can be remotely diagnosed when using our Wi-Fi router. Thank you for your comment, and again, I will consider whether a change is needed.
